Crit_
For the crit all of us had rough ideas of what our methodology was and what route we might take. We were shown examples of previous years design publications to help give us an idea of how they could look.
I dicussed that my work is heavily illustration based, and after uni I have an internship illustrating childrens books - Simon suggested this should be what my publication should be based around.
Feedback
- could make it like a childrens book
- reoccuring characters
- all the questions that are asked when designing a childrens book - this should be the methodology
- printed or handdrawn?
- written content to a minimum
Research_
For some research I bought some children's books on amazon to look at and get inspiration from.
I then did some research into children's book illustrations online_
Following the crit, I went to Waterstones to look at more books and the way they were illustrated and the covers.
The books that stood out to me the most, were Peter Rabbit and Alice in Wonderland pocket size book. I liked the small size and the simplicity to them. With the type on one page and the illustration on the opposite page. This helped me to make further decision on what I wanted my publication to look like and feel like.
HOME_
I went home for a weekend, and I got all of the old childrens books that my family had. Some were my fathers when he was a child, so were pretty old.
These were really interesting to look at and it was interesting how much of the imagery I remembered, and how it bought back emotions just seeing them.
I have the whole peter rabbit collection at home, as this style was the one I most liked from looking in waterstones, I looked at all of the books when I was at home.
I also got some books out from the library on children book illustration_
