_____
For this brief, after research and some thought I decided that I didn't want to produce a range of products, like candles, soaps, diffusers etc. But instead focus on one thing. So I decided to produce a range of luxury soaps.
I wanted to do a female and male range for this as this was something I hadn't really done before.
For the packaging and design, I would produce different hand drawn patterns for this.
I started by creating the patterns, with the hand drawn patterns. These would then be scanned in, and flipped and repeated to create a whole pattern.
So I had 4 corners of a pattern, which I would then produce digitally.
I then started to think about how the packaging could work. The soaps would be wrapped like a present, but with a label.
I didn't just want to have a belly band sort of thing, so I come up with the idea of making it similar to a clothes label. With the logo on one side and the name on the other.
The box, will include 3 bars of soap in the range. So one pattern will be spilt into 3 different colours to create one range of scents. The box will be simple, with a bottom and a lid with the pattern on it, then a label wrapping around it with the relevant information.
Thinking of a name for the brand -
Each scent would have a name, these will be human names, to make it apparent which are male and which are female. I brainstormed some names of what to call them, and what colours these could be.
Now it came to creating the digital design, I first started with finding colours that I wanted each design to be.
Then I had to scan in the drawings, take the background out on photoshop and turn them into pngs.
Once repeated to a full design I then needed to tidy these up. To change the colours, I live painted the designs and individually changed the colour of each part of the design.
I printed these out to see how it would look wrapped around the bar of soap. I played around with the size of the pattern to make sure it showed the pattern well with enough of it, but also not too much with the pattern being too small.
Once I was happy, I then did this with each of the other designs. I had to do this three times for each of the four patterns to create the range of colours.
Eventually I had 12 patterns for the soap wraps_
The brand was simply called soap. But I needed a logo for this. With the patterns being so intricate and detailed I wanted the rest of the design to remain simple and clean. I tried out different typefaces.
I decided on pistilli for the logo. I felt it was both feminine and masculine so worked well for the brand.
I then did tests for the labels. First I thought they were to big in height, as there was too much white space above and below the logo and the name.
So I redid it, smaller. This looked a lot better.
I then made one this size, for each of the 12 scents.
I needed to have the ingredients on the packaging as well. I thought this could be placed on the bottom of the soap, so tested this out as well. I first test I did the type was too heavy, so I proceeded to make this lighter so that it was more legible.
Then created them for each of the 12 scents.
Then I created the net for the box with the measurements I had worked out.
I clipping masked the patterns to the net. I chose the mid colours of every range for the colour that would be on the box.
Then I made the label that would go around the box. This included the fragrance collection, what each of the soaps scents.
Printing the final wraps_
I printed all the soap wraps, and the labels cut these out and fitted the labels in.
Printing the boxes_
I printed the boxes on card, cut them down and them put the boxes together.
I also bought 6 bars of soap that I could wrap and places inside two of the boxes. I wrapped these up in the wraps I had previously made.
When it comes to photographing the work I will have to unwrap the soap and rewrap them with the female range wraps, as I can't afford to buy 12 bars of soap!
I also placed white tissue inside the box to make it more presentable and to pad out the box a little.
I printed the box labels on grey paper at first as I thought maybe something different to white would look nice, however it didn't really fit all that well, I decided to use white paper instead, I then placed these around all the boxes_
