SELF DIRECTED 6 / Wrapping Paper

WRAPPING PAPER

____

Intro

After completing my COP brief, it inspired a new brief. Creating prints that could be used for wrapping paper, and potentially across different media. For the perfume packaging designs I did for cop, I created different flower prints that I thought would work well for this brief. So I thought I could use these four prints as a start, and then expand this further with other prints.

Thinking about this, I came up with different areas from which to create prints.

- Flowers
- Fruit / Veg
- Animals / Birds
- Children / Baby

Research_

I did some research into wrapping paper and print design before starting on my own.

COP Prints turned into wrapping paper prints_

I did feel that these worked really well as individual prints. I was happy with these.

To go with the wrapping paper, I thought I would create tags to go with them.

Fruit and Veg_

After I had done the flower prints. I started on the fruit and veg prints.

I chose to illustrate
- Aubergine
- Chilli
- Clementine
- Pear

Children_

Then I did children / baby.

- Boats and Lighthouses
- Bunnies
- Teddies
- Elephants

I tested these with both a white and cream background.

Print tests_

After these were done digitally, I decided to print them out to see how they looked physically. To get a better idea of what elements could be improved.

I really liked the elephant print and the teddy print, the teddy on cream, or the elephant on white. I didn't think the boat or bunny prints were strong at all, and either needed to be redone or scrapped.

With the fruit and veg prints, I liked them but I thought they needed a second element with them, as they just had one illustration in them, rather than two like the others.

____

I came back to this brief after a week at home for easter and rethought through it all. I was happy with the flower prints, and two of the children prints. Looking back at the research I did, I didn't feel that the 'children' designs was were my strengths necessarily lied, so I decided to keep the two I was happy with but leave it at that.

I wanted to revisit the fruit and veg area, I really liked the clementine and pear, but did think they need another element. I also wasn't a huge fan of the aubergine looking back at them so I decided I would try a new design.

Added elements_

Adding the elements in, I ended up feeling that the prints actually worked better with one element. I didn't dislike the print with both but kind of felt it worked better without the added element, keeping it simple.

_____

Decided final prints_

Now that I had 4 flower prints, 4 fruit and veg prints and 2 children prints, so in total 10 prints. I felt happy with this, and I think once in context the prints will work really well. The next step is to place the prints in context and to photograph them.
