LOGO DESIGN
_____
A friend of a course mate needed an illustrative logo doing, so I decided to put myself forward to do it as it seemed like something I would enjoy doing. She ideally wanted it within a very short time frame of about 4 days so the turn around had to be fairly quick.
She had a very clear idea of what she wanted. This was the front face of an elephant, which was filled with African patterns.
I found a clear image of a front face of an elephant that I could trace round on illustrator and then fill in with pattern by hand.
I then did some research into African patterns.
Starting to design_
I used the pen tool and strokes to create the patterns inside. I made sure I kept referring to the research I had done as I was completing the patterns to make sure they were inspired by African patterns.
I kept the design symmetrical in the upper part of the elephants face. To see how the pattern was coming along I would copy and reflect the design from one side to another so I could understand better what was working and what wasn't.
Jess wanted the design to be placed within a circle as the logo was going to be placed on stickers.
The final design I had was this.
I sent this to Jess to get feedback on anything she liked and disliked. At this point she had changed her mind completely on what she wanted. So it was back to the drawing board.
____
She decided that she now wanted a tree within a circle, that was very detailed and had a large emphasis on the roots and the branches.
So I then started design this. I used the pen tool to create the outline of the tree, and then used the paint brush tool to create the detail inside the tree. I also added leaves.
I kept in close contact with Jess to make sure that she was happy with the way the design was going and just incase she changed her mind again.
Once I had done this I had sent it to Jess and she asked me to try and add bits of brown and green.
I also tried different coloured circles around the edge.
Discussing the design with Jess, we didn't feel like it looked great. Jess really liked the green, so we decided to make the whole tree green. No pattern just fill. This looked a tonne better.
Another point Jess made was that the branches seemed to droop downwards, as if the tree was dead. So wanted the branches to move upwards more so that the tree looked full of life.
So I changed the branches to fit with this. She also wanted the trunk of the tree to be split up into more roots as opposed to one large block of colour.
The final design_
We finally got to a point where Jess was very happy with the design.
Overall, the logo took a lot longer than anticipated and it changed from the type of design that I was initially interested in doing. I wasn't hugely fond of the final logo design, however Jess was very happy with it and a happy customer is main thing. It was also a very good experience to work with a paying client, working to their needs rather than just my own.
